A lot of people have brought this up. You're right, of course.
The point I was trying to make, perhaps inelegantly, is that at least until Nazi propaganda starting inflaming racist antisemitism, Jews in Germany were about as white as they are in America today (meaning, not fully). They had many of the traits that constitute "whiteness" and the power the term connotes in progressive discourse today: they often passed as white, they were pretty assimilated into German society, and they had money, cultural influence, and some political power.
None of it mattered in the end.
So to the extent that progressives are reluctant to speak up for Jews because they see us as "white," they should look at what happened in Germany and many other places.
