First, thanks for writing this. I appreciate the research you did and the empathy you show for the way some Jews reacted.

Second, I don't think Whoopi should've been punished. We're all learning here and I don't think she was being malicious.

The part I strongly disagree with is where you say "Whoopi is technically right." Whoopi was wrong. The Holocaust was about race, and that cannot be changed, no matter how Jews are viewed in America today.

Imagine that hundreds of years in the future, we achieve full racial equality in America and no longer see each other as members of different racial groups. Would it be right to then say, "American slavery wasn't about race, since we now don't look at people as part of different races?" I think that would be ridiculous. Because slavery was heavily race-based when it was happening, it always will have been "about race" no matter what happens in the future.
