Like I said, I’m all for compassion and education. I don’t like the way we jump on people and try to shame them for how their words come out, either, and as I said I disagree with suspending her from the show because I think it models punishment over dialogue. I think in a free and diverse society we have to be able to talk to each other and show grace.

A distinction that may be worth thinking about:

The question of whether Jews are a race is separate from the question of whether the Holocaust is about race. Whoopi didn’t say Jews aren’t a race, she said the Holocaust wasn’t about race.

What I’m noticing is that many people who are defending her remarks are doing so by saying “but Jews aren’t a race!” For Jews like me, that’s irrelevant because what we heard her say is “the Holocaust wasn’t about race” which negates the reason our people were exterminated.
