Thanks, Dwight. I appreciate your comment but I think it's a bit more complicated than you say.
Race is a construct. Jewishness was constructed as a race by Hitler (to lethal effect), but also by others before and after him.
Whiteness has likewise been constructed in ways that have evolved dramatically over time: Italians, Irish people, Greeks, and many other groups were not considered white (or at least fully white) until relatively recently.
Judaism is a religion - a religion mostly practiced by the Jewish People. A people is not exactly a race or a religion. And the Jewish people contains lots of ethnicities, some borrowed from the countries where groups of Jews have lived and some more wholly Jewish (e.g. Ashkenazi Jews).
Like you, I'm an atheist. What does it mean, then, when I say I'm a Jew? It means I'm a member of the Jewish people. It means I identify with the Jewish ethnicity and the story of my Jewish ancestors.
It means Hitler would have wanted to kill me, and it means people who think like him today want to kill me, regardless of what religion I profess.
Jews are weird and confusing. Sorry. If you want to convert, there would definitely be some weird rituals but interestingly, you would not have to profess faith in God. :)
