This is helpful, thanks. I don’t live in Israel, so I’m not tuned in to the new connotations the word “Zionist” has taken on.
I share your views re the settler movement, which I view as an injustice to Palestinians as well as a threat to Zionism.
One writer I’ve read pointed out that references to being a “Zionist” today are anachronistic, since Zionism was really a movement for the establishment of a Jewish homeland, and since that movement has succeeded, it doesn’t make a complete sense to self-describe as a Zionist today. I think it’s an interesting point but a little subtle for my purposes. (And the term is certainly going to remain in use whether I like it or not.)
